Blinds over curtains

Thank you Annette who blogs at Wallys Paper for the post on blinds. It was lovely to see your warm home and how well the blinds fit in. I’m not sure I think the same about the blinds in my home !! The living area blinds have a leafy print. Kind of feels like the shadow of the plants outside. The blinds are lovely… but am not so sure they fit in well with my traditional dark wood décor. What do you think?? Butterflies in my girls room look the best. They are very pleased and so am I!!! The blinds here are translucent (not transparent) which means that there is sufficient light in the house but it doesn’t get too hot in the summers.
This is the print ~
The blinds in my space are called ‘black out’ blinds, which means… if it’s not drawn the rooms looks absolutely dark. I’ve had these for a few days now and can actually feel the difference between curtains and blinds in a warm (rather hot), sunny place like Dubai!! You sure need blinds!
This is how my space looks ~
Well something doesn’t look right in my mom’s room. Don’t get me wrong, the blinds are lovely with little hearts on them, but don’t you think it looks rather bare, undressed types??!!! Please suggest how I can improve this~~ I have a few ideas in mind… and am working on them, but any suggestions are more than welcome!!
Check out more ‘Home Series Blinds’. I have also seen photographs and company logos printed on the blinds. I believe they can custom make and print anything, which I thought was rather impressive. Do check out Serial Trading Dubai who are the distributors on the blinds here for their complete range, and their counterparts in India are Marvel Trading. They obviously have the conventional styles, but the printed ones are out of this world… and I’ve never seen them before!!

  1. Hmmm nice post on blinds Patricia. I sure think blinds look superior to curtains in every aspect. As far as the blinds in your mom's room is concerned, I think you can paint it yourself if it is possible.Something like spraying a colour of your choice with a handy water sprinkler for the back ground and using a contrast make a design over it. Hope that is not too taxing for you.

And for your mom's room may be you could stick some colorful beads on the blinds……just a suggestion….not sure how it wud turn out to be but... may be you cud consider this option….let us know how you treat it finally….This is an interesting project :-)

  4. Blinds definitely have an edge over curtains in blocking the light and heat, which is really important here.

  5. Blinds are definetely better than the curtains in a whole lot of aspects in allowing some light and blocking heat too.The leafy one in your living room looks outstanding.

  7. I love your blinds Patricia. It did give me some ideas. But with almost 6 years of blinds (have been changing apartments in the US) I dream of colorful , billowing curtains. I feel they give me wider and more colorful palette to play with.

  10. Hi Patricia, Though blinds are great, I believe that curtains, from sheer ones to thick damask ones, allow you to personalize your space and add drama. I loved the ones in your living room.

  11. Hi Patricia, I agree with Aditi & Chriysalis.. I just love curtains ! When we moved into our current home, it came with with really nice window-blinds..so we didnt want to just rip them out. We just keep them drawn all the time and added 2 layers of curtains.. Now we pull them down only when it is too hot or cold outside. That way we get to enjoy the warmth of the fabric from inside the house ..still making use of the functionality of the blinds. Hope this helps.

  12. Love the butterfly blinds in your daughter's room. Though blinds do not have the flowing feel of curtains that I love, I do think it's great that they come in so many patterns and designs for places where curtains can't do well enough.

  16. Hi! Pat,
I think either stitching or plain glueing round BUTTONS of various sizes and colours as fuchsia, egg blue, pretty green etc would enliven the blind without much work either;)

  18. I have heard that blinds are better for utility spaces as they don't give out a lot of 'warm' feel. For living rooms, bedrooms and other living spaces, its better to choose blinds that are made from wood and thick fabric, instead of plastic ones. Check out: Curtains Blinds
